How to Keep Your Swimmer Warm at Winter Swim Meets: A Parent's Guide

Why do swimmers get so cold at winter meets?

A swim meet is mostly waiting. A child may swim for two minutes, then sit wet on a cold deck or in a drafty gym for an hour before the next event. Wet skin loses heat fast, the building is kept cool for the water, and in winter the walk to the car can be below freezing. Staying warm between races isn't just comfort — warm muscles perform better, and a shivering kid stops having fun very quickly.

What should a swimmer wear between races?

The short answer: something warm, long, and dry goes on the moment they leave the water. Experienced swim parents rely on this order:

  1. A swim parka first. It goes straight over the wet suit — no changing, no toweling off. A good one (like MariSnug's kids swim parka) has a water-repellent shell so it doesn't soak through, a Sherpa lining for warmth, a hood, and a length that covers the knees, because bare wet legs are where most of the chill comes from.
  2. Warm feet. Deck floors are cold. Slides or deck shoes plus thick socks for the stands.
  3. A hat or hood up. A lot of heat escapes through a wet head; the parka's hood does this job on deck.
  4. Dry layers for the ride home. A full change of dry clothes, including underwear, for after the final event.

What should parents pack for a winter swim meet?

  • Swim parka (the anchor item — it replaces a stack of towels)
  • Two towels (one will be soaked by mid-meet)
  • A dry change of clothes in a separate bag or compartment
  • Warm socks and easy-on shoes
  • A cap and a spare cap, plus spare goggles
  • Water and warm snacks; meets run long
  • A Sharpie for writing events on your swimmer's arm — and, in the parka, our inside name tag with room for several names keeps it from going home with the wrong family

How long do kids wait between races at a meet?

It depends on the meet size, but 30 to 90 minutes between events is common, and big invitationals can run longer. That waiting time — wet, indoors, in a swimsuit — is exactly what a swim parka is designed for. It's also why parents and coaches wear them: an adult swim parka keeps the person holding the stopwatch as warm as the swimmer.

When should my child put the parka on?

Immediately after each swim, before toweling off or heading to the stands. The routine that works: out of the water, parka on and zipped, hood up, then towel the legs and feet. Five minutes before their next event, the parka comes off — muscles stay warm right up to the blocks.

What do swim parents wear at winter meets?

The same thing, in adult sizes. Parents stand on deck and in cold hallways for the same hours. MariSnug adult parkas ($120; kids are $98) come in S, M, and L with the same Sherpa lining, two-way YKK zipper, and below-the-knee cut — and the front pocket has a small hook inside, handy for the keys and phone that otherwise end up on the bleachers.

Frequently asked questions

Is one towel enough for a winter meet? Usually not. Towels get wet fast and then add cold instead of removing it. A parka stays dry on the outside and warm on the inside, which is why most swim families switch after their first winter season.

Can my child wear a regular winter coat instead? They can, but a winter coat isn't made to go over a wet swimsuit — the lining gets damp, heavy, and slow to dry, and most are too short to cover wet legs. A swim parka's water-repellent shell and long cut are designed for exactly this.

What if the meet is indoors and heated? Pool decks are kept cool even in winter, and the wet-waiting problem is the same. Most swimmers still want the parka between events; the ride home is the coldest part anyway.

How do I keep the parka from getting lost at a meet? Write your swimmer's name on the inside name tag (MariSnug's has room for multiple names, for hand-me-downs), and make "parka on the hook / in the bag" part of the post-race routine.

When is the best time to buy a swim parka? Before winter season starts. Sizes sell through once meets begin, and a parka bought in fall serves the whole season — and, because kids' sizes span 4–8 and 8–12, usually several seasons after that. Our sizing guide explains how the two sizes work, and our complete guide to swim parkas covers features in depth.
