Why We Make Only Two Kids Swim Parka Sizes

Most kids swim parkas come in five or six sizes. Ours comes in two: 4–8 and 8–12.

That wasn't an accident, and it wasn't a shortcut. It's one of the most deliberate decisions we made when we designed the MariSnug kids swim parka — and once you see how the parka is cut, it makes complete sense.

How kids swim parka sizing usually works — and why it's frustrating

Most swim parkas are cut close to the body, so the size chart has to do all the work: every couple of inches of growth means a new size, and a size that fits in September is riding up by February. Parents end up buying the same parka two or three times across one childhood.

We cut ours differently: long — past the knee — and roomy through the body, the way a proper swim parka should fit on a cold pool deck at 6 AM.

That generous cut is what makes two sizes work. The 4–8 is a warm, roomy wrap for a four-year-old, and it still covers properly at eight. Same story with the 8–12: roomy when they grow into it, still doing its job years later.

Room to grow: one parka, season after season

Because our swim parka for kids is cut long and roomy, one size carries a swimmer through season after season of swim meets, early practices, and chilly deck waits. That's fewer parkas to buy, less gear piling up in the closet — and no mid-season replacement when your swimmer hits a growth spurt the week before championships.

A kids swim parka built to be handed down

When a swimmer finally does outgrow their parka, it isn't done. Inside the back of every MariSnug kids parka, you'll find a name tag with room for more than one name — because we designed this parka to be handed down: to a younger sibling, a teammate, the next kid who's just starting out.

Write the first name. Leave room for the second. That's the whole idea.

Fewer sizes, made right

There's another reason we keep our size range simple. We spent 20+ years in the apparel business before starting MariSnug, and we learned that every unnecessary variation adds cost — cost that quietly gets passed to families. Two sizes instead of six means we put our effort where it matters: a water-repellent shell, plush Sherpa lining, a two-way YKK zipper, and construction that holds up season after season.

We intentionally simplify, so we can pass that value back to the families who buy our parkas. (Whether your family calls it a swim parka or a swim robe, the idea is the same: one warm layer, made right.)

Kids swim parka size guide: 4–8 or 8–12?

  • Size 4–8 — for younger and smaller swimmers, roughly ages 4 through 8
  • Size 8–12 — for bigger kids, roughly ages 8 through 12

Right on the line between the two? Think about height, and how many seasons you want out of it. The parka is meant to fit long and roomy — if your swimmer is tall for their age, or you want maximum room to grow, go with the 8–12.

Frequently asked questions

What size swim parka should I get for a 6-year-old? For most 6-year-olds, choose the MariSnug 4–8. It's cut long and roomy, so it will fit now and keep fitting for seasons. If your child is tall for their age, the 8–12 gives extra growing room.

How should a kids swim parka fit? A swim parka should fit long and loose — ideally past the knee — so it covers wet legs and layers easily over a swimsuit or warm-ups. A roomy fit is a feature, not a flaw: it traps warmth and leaves room to grow.

How long will a kids swim parka last? A well-made parka in a roomy cut can last one swimmer several seasons — and with a hand-me-down name tag inside, MariSnug parkas are designed to serve the next swimmer after that.

Can a swim parka be handed down to a sibling? Yes — that's exactly what we designed for. The name tag inside the back of every kids parka has room for multiple names, season after season, sibling to sibling.

Two sizes. Seasons of wear. Room for every name that comes after the first.

That's MariSnug — parkas made right.
