What Is a Swim Parka? A Complete Guide for Swim Families
What is a swim parka?
A swim parka (also called a swim coat or deck coat) is a long, warm coat designed specifically for swimmers. It has a water-repellent outer shell and a soft fleece or Sherpa lining, and it is worn over a swimsuit before a session, between races at a meet, and after getting out of the pool. Unlike a towel or a regular winter coat, a swim parka is made to be pulled on over wet skin and a wet suit, again and again, without getting heavy or soggy.
At MariSnug, our swim parkas are Sherpa-lined, fall below the knee, and close with a two-way YKK zipper — so a swimmer can stay warm on deck and still sit, walk, and climb the blocks comfortably.
What is a swim parka used for?
Swimmers and swim families use a parka for:
- Staying warm between races at meets, where kids can wait an hour or more between events
- The trip from pool to car in winter — no changing out of a wet suit in a cold locker room
- Early-morning practices, when the deck is cold and the swimmer is half awake
- Keeping muscles warm before a race, which coaches recommend for performance and comfort
- Parents and coaches on deck, who stand in the cold just as long as the swimmers do
Swim parka vs. swim robe: what's the difference?
The two terms overlap, and many people use them interchangeably. Generally, a swim robe is lighter and towel-like — closer to a wearable towel for drying off. A swim parka is a true coat: insulated lining, a weather-resistant shell, a hood, and a zipper, built for cold outdoor conditions as much as the pool deck. If your swimmer trains through the winter, you want the parka.
How to choose a swim parka
1. Lining. Look for a thick fleece or Sherpa lining through the body and hood. The lining is what actually keeps a wet swimmer warm; a thin lining turns a parka into a windbreaker.
2. Shell. The outside should be water-repellent so pool water and rain bead off instead of soaking through. (No swim parka is fully waterproof — and any brand that promises that is overselling.)
3. Zipper. A two-way zipper from a quality maker like YKK matters more than it sounds. Swimmers zip and unzip dozens of times a day, and a two-way zip lets them sit down without unzipping the whole coat.
4. Length. A parka should reach at least to the knee. Shorter cuts leave wet legs exposed to cold air; below-the-knee coverage is what makes the walk to the car comfortable.
5. Details that earn their place. A name tag inside matters for kids who will hand the parka down to a sibling (ours has room for several names). A small hook inside the pocket keeps keys and hair ties from vanishing into the deck floor.
What size swim parka should I buy?
Kids grow fast, so we keep it simple: MariSnug kids' parkas come in just two sizes, 4–8 and 8–12, designed with room to grow through multiple seasons. If your child is between sizes, size up — a parka is worn over a swimsuit and should feel roomy, not fitted. Adults' parkas come in S, M, and L. (We explain the thinking behind our two-size system in our kids swim parka sizing guide.)
Are swim parkas worth it?
For a family at the pool once a week in summer, a towel is fine. For a swimmer training or competing through fall and winter, a parka replaces the pile of wet towels, the shivering car ride, and the coat that was never meant to get wet — and a well-made one lasts for years of hand-me-downs. MariSnug kids' parkas are $98 and adults' are $120, made by a company with 20+ years in apparel manufacturing. Browse the kids swim parka and adult swim parkas to see colors and sizes.
Frequently asked questions
Can you wear a swim parka in the rain? Yes. The shell is water-repellent, so rain and splashes bead off. It is designed for wet environments, though it is not a raincoat and will eventually wet through in a downpour.
How do you wash a swim parka? Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry. Always check the care label on your parka first.
Do swim parkas run big? They are designed to be roomy, because they go on over a wet swimsuit. Order your child's usual size range rather than sizing down.
What age is a kids swim parka for? Our two sizes cover most swimmers from age 4 through 12. Older or taller kids often move into the adult Small, which is the same parka in a longer cut.
Is a swim parka only for competitive swimmers? No. Swim lessons, dive practice, water polo, beach mornings, and even dance competitions (warm-ups between numbers) all have the same pattern: a cold wait in a costume or suit. A parka solves it anywhere it happens.
