Less, But Better: Why Every Detail on Our Parka Had to Earn Its Place

There’s a question we ask about every single detail on a MariSnug swim parka: does this serve a real need? If the answer is no, it’s gone.

That sounds simple. In the apparel industry, it’s actually radical.

The problem we kept seeing

When we started designing our parka, we looked at what was already out there and saw the same pattern everywhere. The big-brand parkas were loaded with extras — extra pockets, extra flaps, extra trims, extra everything. Each addition added cost. And who paid for it? Families, at checkout.

On the other end, the cheap options cut the wrong things — thin linings, flimsy zippers, shortcuts you feel by February.

We thought: what if we did the opposite? What if we kept only what actually matters, made those things genuinely excellent, and passed the savings on to families?

What “intentional simplicity” looks like

Here’s what survived our test:

  • A water-repellent shell — because pool decks are wet, and a parka that soaks through is useless. Kept.
  • Thick Sherpa fleece lining — because warmth is the entire job. Kept, and we didn’t skimp on it.
  • A two-way YKK zipper — because it gets yanked with wet hands twice a week all winter. The short version: a cheap zipper dies under that life. Kept, and we bought the good ones.
  • An over-the-knee cut — because little legs lose heat fastest. Kept.

And here’s what didn’t make it: decorative trims nobody touches, extra compartments that add bulk, fussy details that look good in a product photo and do nothing on a pool deck. Every cut was a cost we didn’t pass on to you.

The zipper color story

Our favorite example: the zipper itself. Our first prototypes had true black zippers — classic, safe, conservative. And honestly? Boring. They made the parka look like everything else.

So we chose a fun, elevated gender-neutral blue instead. It adds a pop of color, a luxury look, and — this is the part we love — it costs us nothing extra. Good design doesn’t have to cost more. It just has to be intentional.

Where the savings go

Here’s the part most brands won’t tell you: when you simplify a design, you save money. Fewer components, fewer production steps, less waste. Too often, that difference never reaches the customer.

That’s the whole point of MariSnug: it reaches the family instead.

We’re two moms with 20+ years in the apparel industry. We know exactly what things cost to make, and we know when a price tag is paying for the product versus paying for the brand name on the label. We started this company because we were frustrated — overpriced parkas, over-accessorized designs, cheap ones that fell apart.

So we made a rule: simplify with purpose, and pass the value back to families. Well-made essentials, without unnecessary costs. That’s not a slogan — it’s how we design.

The result

A swim parka with everything your family needs, nothing they don’t, at a price that respects your budget. Warm, durable, and built to survive seasons of swim meets — not seasons of trends.

That’s what “less, but better” means to us. 💙
